- Compare the fee and effective rate before you invoice a customer.
How it’s calculated
Same percent-plus-fixed model as card processors: fee = amount × percent + fixed. Reverse charge = (net + fixed) ÷ (1 − percent).
Worked check on the default schedule: charge $100.00 → fee $2.99 → net $97.01. Reverse: to keep $100.00, charge about $103.08.
Worked example: PayPal US G&S on $50
Fee = 50 × 0.0299 = $1.50 (rounded). Net ≈ $48.50. Checkout on $50 would be 50 × 0.0349 + 0.49 ≈ $2.24.

Tips for pricing with PayPal
- Do not confuse Send/Receive Money G&S (2.99%) with PayPal Checkout (3.49% + $0.49).
- Goods & Services includes purchase protection for buyers; Friends & Family usually does not.
- Micropayments pricing can be cheaper under a low amount threshold when enabled on the account.
- Cross-border fees stack on top of domestic commercial rates — use the international schedule for estimates.
Common mistakes
- Asking customers to send business payments as Friends & Family to dodge fees (policy and protection risk).
- Using the Checkout rate when modeling personal G&S Send/Receive Money (or vice versa).
- Ignoring currency conversion markups on cross-border balances.
- Using US rates for a UK or AU merchant account.
Goods & Services vs Friends & Family
Goods & Services (commercial) payments include buyer protections appropriate for selling online. Friends & Family is intended for personal transfers and is often free when funded from balance or bank — but using F&F for business sales can violate policy and removes protections. For client work, invoices, and storefronts, use commercial pricing in your quotes even if the rate is higher.
Micropayments and small tickets
PayPal micropayments pricing (when enabled) uses a higher percent and lower fixed fee, which can win on very small amounts where $0.49 fixed dominates standard G&S. If you sell $3–$8 digital items, compare micropayments against standard G&S in this calculator before you publish prices.
Regional PayPal accounts
UK and Australia publish domestic commercial rate cards; PayPal India lists international receiving only (no domestic). A US freelancer invoicing a UK client may still be on US rates depending on account setup — but your buyer’s experience and FX can differ. Select the regional schedule closest to your merchant account country, then verify on PayPal’s business fees page.
